As Valentine’s Day approaches, I am reminded of a story that a friend once shared. She told me about how her fiancé proposed to her by making a special meal from scratch. He not only bought the food, but also a new grill to cook on. She said that to him “food was love.”
When my two girls were very young, they would pretend to be a chef, feed their stuffed animals, or be a waiter and get my husband and I pretend food. Once they were old enough to participate in the kitchen, they begged to help cook. Their favorite by far was baking. I usually heard a request near each holiday to bake my sugar cookies using “grandmother’s” cookie cutters.
Baking has evolved into a special time with my daughters. They each like different parts of the process and something miraculous happens when we bake – they share, take turns and get along! One is very scientific and likes to measure, discuss and ingredient’s role in baking, and what happens during the process. The other is more physical and likes to dump, spread, mix – and of course crack the eggs.
When my husband and I started cooking for the girls long ago, we made it a habit of telling them when we cooked, that “we made ______ for them with love.” And, now that the girls cook and bake more regularly, they make sure to tell anyone who will listen that they “made ______with extra, extra love!”
So, as I started thinking about Valentine’s Day presents, I thought, wouldn’t a kid’s cookbook and some of their own cooking utensils be perfect. It’s a gift that won’t be gone in ten minutes like candy and one that will hold interest unlike another stuffed animal. So, I decided to give them a copy of Everybody Cooks! STEM Facts and Recipes for Family Cooperation and Healthier Eating – Holiday Edition. We can try a new recipe for many, many holidays and observances throughout the year and they can learn the science behind food, and we can experiment with some new foods.
Share this same love of cooking by trying the many recipes in Everybody Cooks! STEM Facts and Recipes for Family Cooperation and Healthier Eating - Holiday Favorites Edition. Every recipe has step-by-step directions for each member of the family to follow according to his or her ability. And the special STEM section shows young cooks the Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics behind the recipe or product.
